Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez (June 6, 1599 – August 6, 1660), commonly referred to as Diego Velázquez, was a Spanish painter who was the leading artist in the court of King Philip IV. He was an individualistic artist of the contemporary baroque period, important as a portrait artist. In addition to numerous renditions of scenes of historical and cultural significance, he painted scores of portraits of the Spanish royal family, other notable European figures, and commoners, culminating in the production of his masterpiece Las Meninas (1656). - Wikipedia

I thought the hot air balloon flight last week was stupid… There’s so many new ‘discoveries’ lately, they could change it every 5 minutes.

I reckon they should just leave it the same, and show Earth day or some other MEANINGFUL cause that needs to attract the attention of hundreds of millions of people.

A delight to open to my homepage this morning and see this, especially if one is an art historian at heart. Thank you.

Great idea to honour someone with such talent from the past. I was not familier with his work, but was curious enough to do a little quick research (using Google)and came away knowing a little bit more.

I just noticed that Google didn’t display the fourth of July doodle when I opened my browsers, and now that I think about it, it hasn’t displayed any doodles for the past few months, is it possible that they stop showing them in different countries, I’m in Italy btw.

And it’s not a problem of browser’s cache, I used different computers, FF IE OP and even a fresh install on a virtual machine.

any idea?
