German reunification took place on October 3, 1990 (check it out) and now is a national holiday in Germany.

Google celebrating their 8th Birthday on September 7th 2006.

Google is a part of our online lives today - be it google search, google adsense, google talk …. And September 7 is Google’s Birthday!

Google was officially born on September 7, 1998 as per a post on the Google Help centre. A look down the corporate history of Google, I quote this small snippet.

“On September 7, 1998, Google Inc. opened its door in Menlo Park, California. The door came with a remote control, as it was attached to the garage of a friend who sublet space to the new corporation’s staff of three. The office offered several big advantages, including a washer and dryer and a hot tub. It also provided a parking space for the first employee hired by the new company: Craig Silverstein, now Google’s director of technology.

Already Google.com, still in beta, was answering 10,000 search queries each day. The press began to take notice of the upstart website with the relevant search results, and articles extolling Google appeared in USA TODAY and Le Monde. That December, PC Magazine named Google one of its Top 100 Web Sites and Search Engines for 1998. Google was moving up in the world.”

Google Israel(Google.co.il) celebrating Rosh Hashana on September 22nd, 2006.

Rosh Hashana is one of the four Jewish new years, Wikipedia explains. In the logo, the second “o” is replaced with a shofar, a ram’s horn used as a religious musical instrument.

Google Talk, Google’s Instant Messenger is celebrating its first birthday - Aug 24th, 2006.

This simple application from Google has made made PC-to-PC calls so easy that kinder garden kids can make calls to anyone connected to a PC and using Google talk.

Google has released a new variant of the Personalized Homepage which covers U.S. Government information. You’ll get the Washington DC weather, Google News information covering gov’t issues, White House press releases and so on. This is more of a mashup of existing Google services – both the Google gov’t search, as well as the Personalized Homepage and its ability to subscribe to RSS, have been around for a while.
